Lance O’Brien of Kulcha Shok Muzik is one of the most well-known and respected reggae DJs and promoters in the state of Florida. Under Kulcha Shok, he produces, promotes, and DJs countless reggae events throughout Florida each year (like his uber-popular Reggae Sundays at Wynwood Yard in Miami) and launches the careers of other reggae artists by leveraging his wellestablished platform. Known mostly by his DJ name Lance-O, this music industry powerhouse is also a life-long surfer who promotes the positive surf lifestyle within his Kulcha Shok productions.
Part of Lance-O’s involvement in the surf industry includes announcing at surf contests, something he has enjoyed doing since 1998. With a crisp, commanding voice honed from years as a radio DJ and a deep knowledge of surfing, Lance-O fills this role wonderfully. That’s why the Salty Sweet Pro-Am Contest in Cocoa Beach sought him out to announce their first event in 2014 and every year since; he has become a fixture at this popular annual contest.
Though Lance-O has been involved with many large surf events such as the East Coast Surfing Championships, the Jupiter Fall Classic, and Cocoa Beach’s Easter Pro-Am, announcing the Salty Sweet contest is what Lance-O looks forward to the most: “It’s such a good contest…super fun and everyone is great, from the surfers to the staff and spectators. They are very loving.”
Perhaps the fact the Salty Sweet Pro-Am takes place in Cocoa Beach is part of its appeal for Lance-O, who says:
“To me, Cocoa Beach is the epicenter of East Coast Surfing. There’s always a wave to surf if your standards aren’t too high. The talent, the shapers, the museum and the events in that area just breathe surfing.”
Being involved with Space Coast surf events often gives Lance-O the opportunity to do something he truly loves: combining music with surfing. You’ll often see Lance-O DJing surf contest after-parties, bringing his extensive knowledge of reggae music to the surf massive.
To Lance-O, it’s about having fun and sharing the stoke. To that end, he tries to mix the surfer reggae-rock vibe with the original Jamaican reggae sound. He says, “We just keep it positive & strictly good vibes with feel good music. It’s all about the vibe. Once the vibe is there, nothing else matters.”
Big thanks and much respect to Lance-O for all he does for both the surf and reggae communities in Brevard County!
Kulcha Shok is organizing the Ocean Love & Muzik Fest for Saturday, February 9th, 2019 (three days after Bob Marley’s birthday). The event focuses on the love, appreciation and respect that Lance-O and Kulcha Shok have for the ocean. There will be non-profit organizations there that protect, enrich & honor the ocean as well as ocean activities like surfing, paddeboarding, skimboarding, and ocean-minded musicians on the beach in Deerfield Beach, FL.
