Whitening your teeth can be one of the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective way of changing the appearance of your smile. When choosing a whitening system, be open minded to the fact that you may not get the results you want right away. Also, make sure that you do your due diligence to get the best result from whatever whitening system you choose. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind before booking your teeth whitening appointment:
1. Make sure that you have a professional dental teeth cleaning done before you decide to whiten your teeth, or that you are on a regular six month recall with your dentist. The reason why this is a very important step is because microscopically your teeth are porous. These microscopic pores on your teeth are the pathways for the whitening material to go into the tooth and essentially chemically dehydrate the tooth from the inside out. Don’t worry, the chemical dehydrating part is how your teeth whiten. If these pores are blocked with calculus and organic material then the whitening solution cannot get inside the tooth to do what you want it to do.
2. When choosing to go see a professional to get an in-house whitening treatment done, make sure that the person is educated on what they are doing. Don’t be afraid to ask the professional questions about their experience or knowledge of the teeth whitening system that they are using. Ask questions like: How many teeth whitening treatments have they performed? How many years have they been providing this service? Have they only ever used the one teeth whitening system that you’re about to have done? These are all good questions.
3. Post care after your treatment is key to getting and keeping the results you want. Make sure you eat light colored foods and drink light colored drinks after you get your teeth whitening treatment. Things that can stain a white tablecloth will stain your teeth. Remember that comment earlier that I said about chemically dehydrating your teeth. Well your teeth want to be rehydrated so they are going to pull in any kind of moisture that you introduce. For the next 24 hours, drink only water post treatment.
4. Make sure that your teeth whitening professional has everything to protect you. Every laser teeth whitening system has a certain level of risks. So make sure that your professional protects your cheeks, lips and gums with some sort of a barrier. Also make sure that you are given protective eyewear.
5. When you settle in to have your teeth whitening treatment done, make sure that you are comfortable. The last thing you want to do is lay in a chair or a bed that you’re not comfortable in. Let your professional know that you’re not comfortable and they can do things to help ensure your comfort. One hour can feel like an eternity when you’re not comfortable.
